SNAP FOOD STAMPS.

SNAP hotline web info (1).png

12.6% of Iowans are food insecure, meaning they do not have the ability to acquire nutritionally adequate and safe foods in socially acceptable ways. This translates to 389,250 Iowans being forced to make tough decisions about providing food for their families or paying their rent or mortgage, transportation, or medical bills.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) is available to assist these individuals, but due to lack of access and knowledge of the program, many individuals do not apply to receive benefits. 75% of the individuals accessing emergency food through food pantries, community kitchens, and shelters are eligible for SNAP, but 25% of them have never applied (Hunger in America 2010, Feeding America).
