Boy Scouts of America – Mid-American Council collected 5,204 lbs. of non-perishable food items and over $1,500 from local neighborhoods as well as Hy-Vee and Fareway locations. Scouts were able to commemorate this annual food drive by presenting the City of Sioux City with the first donation bag.
Nearly 14,000 meals were raised between food and monetary donations. These meals will be distributed to the Food Bank of Siouxland's 100+ agencies.
“We get to help the community cause food banks are usually running lower on food around this time of year, because they usually get most of their donations during the fall. It also helps people who need the food because they usually don’t have. If they can’t get the food, they don’t have the money to get it, so they have to go to the food banks,” said Byron Splitter, a scout with Troop 204.
Scouting for Food is an annual community service effort supported directly by the Mid-America Council which covers Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Under the Boy Scouts of America strategic pillar of being recognized as an advocate for youth and youth issues, Scouts across Nebraska and Western Iowa collect altogether nearly 200,000 food items for those in need. This is the equivalent of approximately 114,000 meals.
